Dr. Yunsuk Chae, associate professor of Spanish at Middle Georgia State University, was the translator for the just-published ‘From the Other Shore (Desde la otra orilla),’ a bilingual anthology in English and Spanish. Chae translated the original poems in Spanish, which were selected from six books written by María Paz Moreno. Originally from Spain, Moreno teaches and resides in the U.S. She is a poet, essayist, and literary critic who has been anthologized and published in numerous poetry collections in Spain.
The anthology delves into humanitarianism, racial conflicts, and other social issues, themes that are current with what is going on in the U.S. and the world. Moreno’s treatment of evanescent human life against the backdrop of love is also original and noteworthy. Many of her poems are products of her travels in the U.S., Mexico, and other countries where she keenly and compassionately observes different cultural and social issues as an outsider. With her poetry now published in English, it is expected to reach a wider audience that is interested not only in Hispanic literature and culture but also in comparative literature and culture.
