#MGA’s Dr. Tara Underwood, dean of School of Health & Natural Sciences, met Dr. Jerome Adams, U.S. surgeon general, at Navicent Medical Center earlier this week. Adams spoke to a gathering of medical students, Navicent employees, and community guests about the opioid epidemic in the central Georgia region and nationwide. He promoted efforts to reduce the stigma of opioid addiction and to help those affected with proper treatment and resources. Often referred to as the “nation’s doctor,” the surgeon general heads the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and serves as the federal government’s leading spokesperson on matters of public health. During his Macon visit, Adams toured Navicent, answered questions about various public health issues, and received a key to the city from Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichart.
