Sexual Assault Awareness Month Week 3
Did you know? According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center:
- 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls will experience sexual assault before their 18th birthday
- 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience sexual violence in their lifetime
- Most sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim/survivor (8 of 10 rape cases)
- More than 90% of college victims/survivors of sexual assault do not report
Help us continue the conversation and let the voices of victims/survivors be heard. Learn the facts and dispel the myths. Participate in SAAM events at MGA and share how you are raising awareness, supporting victims/survivors, and talking about consent by posting to Twitter with #KnightsAsk and #IAsk.
This week, complete the scavenger hunt by taking a photo with all of the hidden shirts and posting to Instagram with #shirtsforhealing_mga. Then join us for the clothesline project shirt design at the Student Life Center on April 16th and shirt presentation on April 30th. See the flyer and contact Elaine Behounek for more information.
MGA is encouraged to wear denim in support of Denim Day on April 24th. Denim Day was started because of a court decision in Italy that blamed a victim for her rape. It was ruled that sex had to be consensual because the young woman was wearing jeans. Sexual violence does not occur because of what the victim/survivor was wearing or drinking and is never the victim/survivor’s fault. We will also continue working to raise awareness and dispel the myths by writing on a pair of jeans at the upcoming Table Talks and Clothesline Project.
