Student evaluations of faculty start today

Student evaluations of faculty for Spring 2016 will be sent to students based on the following dates:

First Session Full Session Second Session
February 17 April 25 April 26

Students will have until midnight on the last day of class to complete the evaluations. Students can complete the course evaluation in Brightspace (D2L) or use the link sent to them in their MGA email.

Students will receive an email containing a unique link for each course in which they are enrolled (one email per course).  The email will identify the course, the instructor, and the deadline for completion.  Students can complete the evaluation by opening their email and clicking the link at any time during the survey administration period. A student is only able to submit one evaluation per course, and once submitted it cannot be edited or retracted. Students can complete the evaluation on their smart phone if they have their phone configured to receive their MGA email or by logging into Brightspace.

There will be two widgets in Brightspace on the My Home page. They should be visible to you and your students and will appear on the right side of your My Home page when you first log into the system. One widget is for students, and the other one is for faculty:

1)   Student evaluation widget– this widget will be used by your students to evaluate you. It will contain links to their classes. When they click the link for your class, they will open up a series of forms that are inside the Blue system. The questions they will be asked have not changed.

2)   Blue – Widget for faculty– this widget will allow you to track how many students in your class have completed their evaluation. When you click on the link, like your students, you will be taken to forms inside the Blue system that will give you the current tally of student responses. You will not know which students have completed the process; you will only be given the total that have completed their evaluation. Also on your form is a button called ‘Finalize’, which does not serve any purpose, so please ignore it.

Also, it is normal to see this message inside the D2L widget:  “Application BPI v3.3 by eXplorance inc. is trying to access your information. Would you like to proceed?”  It is part of the communication process between our D2L system and the Blue system. Blue needs to verify the user that is trying to communicate with their system, and it is just another level of security for keeping your evaluations private and confidential.

In order to increase student participation, three options for facilitating student evaluations of faculty are available:

  1. Reserve computer lab

  • If your class is being taught in a computer lab you can set aside class time (10 minutes is appropriate) during the evaluation period;
  • If your class is not being taught in a computer lab, and if you have not already reserved a lab time, you may contact the following:

Ø  Macon campus: Devereaux Lindsey(devereaux.lindsey@mga.edu 478 471-2730)

Ø  WRC campus: Phoebe Rabalais (phoebe.rabalais@mga.edu; 478 929-6700)

Ø  Cochran campus: Contact your department secretary

Ø  Dublin campus: Lynn Allen (lallen@mga.edu; 478 274-7808)

Ø  Eastman campus: Andrea Yawn (andrea.yawn@mga.edu; 478 374-6700)

Note:  The faculty member being evaluated may not to be present in the room while students are completing course evaluations.  Faculty should provide the following instructions, and then leave the room.

Instructions for students:

  1. Log in to MGA email, and complete the steps that follow, or log into Brightspace, and click

on the student widget.

  1. Search for the name of the course
  2. Click on link in email
  3. Complete survey and submit

  1. Use of smart phone, tablet, or laptop in class

Students can use their smart devices or laptops in the classroom to complete evaluations.  Faculty should instruct students to configure smart devices to receive MGA email in advance of evaluations and remind them to bring phones, tablets, or laptops to class on the designated day.

Note:  The faculty member being evaluated may not to be present in the room while students are completing course evaluations.  Faculty should provide the following instructions, and then leave the room.

Instructions for students:

  1. Log in to MGA email through smart device or laptop or log into Brightspace, and click

on the student widget.

  1. Search for the name of the course
  2. Click on link in email
  3. Complete survey and submit

III. Encourage students to complete evaluations outside of class

Faculty can view the completion rate(s) in real-time for each class taught via the Faculty widget. Use this information to encourage a higher participation rate if your rate is low. If you share the current completion rate(s) with your class, please let them know you can only view the class “participation” rate and not the actual evaluations.

Note: Only courses with 5 or more students enrolled will be evaluated – which is a change from the previous policy of 10 or more students enrolled.  Two reminder emails will automatically go out to those students who have not completed the evaluation(s).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

If you are teaching a class during this session, you should receive an email from the Blue eXplorance system around 1pm today, if you do not, please let Charles Smith know. (charles.smith@mga.edu)
