Georgia Legislative Internship Program Information Session

Dear colleagues: I wanted to pass along information about next spring’s session of the Georgia Legislative Internship Program. If you could share this information with faculty and any students in your schools/departments that may be interested, I’d appreciate it.

The program is scheduled to go ahead as planned, although due to some budgetary and other issues there are likely to be a few changes this year. Most notably, it is unclear at this point whether stipends will be made available to participants as usual.

Students are required to work full-time in Atlanta for the duration of the internship. They will receive academic credit at MGA for their participation; in the event an MGA student is selected, the specific academic credit awarded may differ based on the student’s degree program. (Political science students will receive credit for at least POLS 4895, Political Science Internship.) Students may also take other classes while participating in the internship, although this is discouraged. We are in the process of standardizing the internship credit for the program across institutions.

The process timeline is as follows:

  • Complete applications should be submitted to MGA’s GLIP campus coordinator, Dr. Christopher Lawrence (christopher.lawrence@mga.edu), on or before October 9th; these applications will be checked for completeness and then be forwarded to the GLIP Director for consideration. The application form and instructions are available at the main GLIP website (http://www.legis.ga.gov/intern/en-US/default.aspx).
  • Candidate interviews will be held via Zoom the week of November 9th.
  • For those who are selected as interns, placement interviews will be held in mid-December.
  • Orientation will be Wednesday, January 6th—Friday, January 8, 2021.
  • First day of the 2021 Legislative session is Monday, January 11, 2021.

An online information session has been scheduled for Friday, September 11th at 11 a.m. Interested students can register for the event at the link on the attached flyer; they should use their MGA email address to sign up (other addresses may not be approved to deter Zoom-bombing).

Please let me know if you have any questions.
