Career & Leadership Programs and Class Presentations

The Center for Career & Leadership Development's (CCLD) Spring 2023 Career & Leadership Calendar is now available. Faculty and staff may notice some of their large-scale events like the Student Leadership Conference on March 10 (student pre-registration is required at mga.edu/ccld) and the All Industry Job & Internship Fair on March 15 as well as a few specialized workshops focused on career exploration and internships. The CCLD has intentionally decreased the number of small programs so that they can scale up career and leadership resources for students by being more available to take those topics to the classroom (both in-person and online).

Here’s how you can help! Complete the online form to let us know what type of career and leadership education workshop you’d like CCLD to present to one or more of your classes. You’ll see the option of requesting a 45-minute presentation focused on a specific career topic or a short 10-minute infomercial about our services and programs. CCLD asks that you give them at least 2 weeks notice, but they’re happy to consider last-minute requests if they can fit them into their schedule. Once CCLD receives your request, they’ll review it and assign it to a staff member who will follow up with you about your topic.

Why bring career and leadership presentations to the classroom? Our students need career readiness assistance but do not always seek it out on their own for multiple reasons. By coming to the classroom, CCLD can expose students to the importance of professionalism, targeted resumes, interview preparation, internships, preparing for the job or grad school search, and much more.  If you cover career-related topics in your course, linking your students to the CCLD will also help them be more comfortable with using their services and attending employer networking activities.

Why requesting a presentation benefits you as an instructor. In addition to helping your students be more career-ready, inviting CCLD to present to your classes can help you when you have a professional or personal time conflict but don’t want to cancel class.  If you teach online, talk to the CCLD about pre-recorded content that you can add to your D2L – this option is a great way to provide them with an added connection to the university!

Other ways you can help students with their career preparedness. If you can’t fit the CCLD into your syllabus, please encourage your students to start using their resources before they graduate. Students can schedule individual appointments (virtually as well as in-person in Macon and Cochran) with a career advisor by using their Handshake account at mga.joinhandshake.com. All MGA students automatically get a Handshake account when they enroll. All they have to do is activate it with their MGA email in order to log in and make career planning appointments, search for jobs and internships being posted by employers, and register for career fairs and other events.

The Center for Career & Leadership Development looks forward to working with you this semester! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the CCLD.
