MGA students and faculty are invited to submit proposals for presentations at the 18th annual Georgia Philological Association (GPA) conference to be held virtually on May 19-20, 2023. Conference organizers are accepting proposals for session topics, panel discussions, and scholarly papers in English on any subjects relating to literature, language, composition, philosophy, history, translation, the general humanities, interdisciplinary studies, and pedagogy. Proposals are due by March 17. The GPA awards the $100 Vicki Hill Memorial Graduate Recognition Award to the graduate student who presents the most successful paper at each conference. More details can be found at https://www.mga.edu/arts-letters/english/gpa/index.php.
The keynote speaker will be MGA Assistant Professor of English Andy Davidson who will present “Because the Earth Is a Haunted House: Teaching and Writing Horror in a Post-Everything World.” As a literary genre, horror is having a moment. But in a world where facts are far scarier than fiction and the monsters of everyday life are very real, why are readers—and students—hungry for dark fiction? In this talk, novelist Andy Davidson explores lessons learned, both personal and professional, in teaching and writing within the genre. He also tries to answer the perennial question every horror writer dreads: “Why horror?”
Several MGA English faculty are involved in the GPA. Lorraine Dubuisson is currently serving as president and Rhonda Crombie as treasurer. Nate Gilbert is the editor of the peer-reviewed Journal of the Georgia Philological Association. Questions about presentation proposals and the conference, in general, can be sent to lorraine.dubuisson@mga.edu.
