How to Help Employers Wanting to Post Off-Campus Job & Internships to MGA Students

This time of year, campus offices may be contacted by outside employers wanting to post summer jobs, internships, or full-time jobs to students. If you are contacted, please consider sharing that information with the Center for Career & Leadership Development (CCLD) so that they can help the employer get that information to students via Handshake.

If a faculty or staff member is contacted by an employer to share their job and internship opportunity, the CCLD recommends taking the following steps:

  • Forward the information to the CCLD at careerservices@mga.edu.
  • Email the employer and let them know that you have shared the information with the Center for Career & Leadership Development and that someone will be in touch with them.
  • Share with your students if you feel like it checks out and fits their interests. If the organization is not using a company domain email and a professional signature, proceed with caution.

CCLD also has language that you can use if you want to direct employers to Handshake.

Thank you for your interest in hiring MGA students. We recommend that you post the position to our online job board, Handshake. This tool will allow any students who live and attend school inside and outside our service areas to see your posting. To get started with Handshake, you can use this link to create your account and begin posting your jobs. I’ve copied our career development office so that they can assist you with any questions regarding Handshake or how to recruit on campus. You can contact them directly at careerservices@mga.edu.

CCLD strongly recommends that employers only post flyers on departmental bulletin boards with the permission of the specific department. This practice will help eliminate value or misleading job posting flyers that tend to show up related to commission-only part-time jobs.

You can also email the information and employer contact directly to Mary Roberts, mary.roberts3@mga.edu, or Heather McIntosh, heather.mcintosh@mga.edu. The CCLD can also help on-campus offices post jobs and internships to Handshake after the department lists the positions on the MGA Human Resources website.

Additional Information about How the CCLD Uses Handshake to Post Jobs & Internships

The Center for Career & Leadership Development (CCLD) is the centralized place for off-campus employers to post jobs and internships that they want promoted to MGA students and alumni. Employers who want to post flyers across any or all of our five campuses should be directed to contact the CCLD and set up a Handshake account. In addition, if you have an employer who is asking you to share information with students in other ways, the CCLD is here to help facilitate a centralized way for students to get the information.

To access off-campus job and internship postings, students should activate their Handshake account at mga.joinhandshake.com using their MGA email address. When students graduate, they should contact the CCLD to update their address to a personal email in order to continue having access to their accounts.

The CCLD uses Handshake to post and share opportunities with students and alumni in the following ways:

  • Students and alumni who have activated their Handshake account can log in and search the Handshake database for posted opportunities.
  • The CCLD sends a weekly newsletter with posted job and internship opportunities to all current students via Handshake. This newsletter is meant to get students interested in the postings so that they will log in and look for additional ones.
  • Although the CCLD are unable to email students about each individual job, they occasionally send targeted emails to students when working directly with a specific employer.

The CCLD can also help on-campus offices post jobs and internships that are already listed on the MGA Human Resources website.  However, you must first post with the HR department so that you comply with their process and so that students and other job seekers are also aware of your opportunity.

The centralized process is designed to make it easier for students as well as faculty and staff to direct students toward job and internship opportunities for MGA students.  In addition, the CCLD uses the Handshake database to invite employers to career fairs and other employer networking events that benefit students. Employers with Handshake accounts can easily register for career fairs as well. Employers can access Handshake at mga.joinhandshake.com.

CCLD understands that some departments are working with employers on academic internships and may not be able to share that information with students outside your department. However, if you are working with an internship that could benefit multiple majors or the employer has other hiring needs, please consider connecting that employer with the CCLD. Internships provide students with the critical skills and experiences that they need to find full-time professional employment. The CCLD believes students should pursue internships, even if they are not required for their academic program.

You can direct any specific questions about our process to Dr. Mary Roberts, Executive Director, or Dr. Heather McIntosh, Assistant Director for Internships & Career Readiness, in the Center for Career & Leadership Development.
