On February 17, faculty in MGA's Department of Natural Sciences and friends hosted a regional tournament of the Georgia Science Olympiad. 18 teams of high school students from across the state competed in a variety of STEAM-based events. Dr. Larry Camarota, Dr. Upendra Adhikari, and Dr. Shauna Mein organized the event.
During the competition, students had to build robots that ran a maze, towers that could stand a thousand times their weight, and cars that were powered by a single egg. They decoded secret messages, estimated the mysteries of the universe, and solved the mystery of the stolen rabbit.
In the end, five teams that competed at MGA scored well enough in all of their events to continue to the state level at Georgia Tech on March 30 to compete with 31 other teams in the state tournament. After that, three teams from the state tournament will be selected to represent Georgia in the National Science Olympiad tournament taking place May 24-25.
