Downtown Macon | Douglass Theater, 355 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Macon, GA 31201
MGA's 2024 Arts Festival includes a free screening and discussion of The Celluloid Closet at downtown Macon's Douglass Theater at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 27. The theme of the MGA Arts Festival, hosted by the School of Arts & Letters, is "Reel People," which explores how people who have historically not been depicted in or employed by Hollywood have found their way into the movies.
The Celluloid Closet is a 1996 American documentary film directed and co-written by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. The film is based on Vito Russo's 1981 book The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in the Movies, and on lecture and film clip presentations he gave from 1972 to 1982. Russo had researched the history of how motion pictures, especially Hollywood films, had portrayed gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender characters.
