On September 18, the MGA community gathered at the Macon Campus to hear Michael Thurmond discuss his new biography of James Oglethorpe, the British Army officer and politician best known for founding the colony of what became the U.S. state of Georgia.
In his book, James Oglethorpe, Father of Georgia: A Founder’s Journey from Slave Trader to Abolitionist, Thurmond makes the provocative case that Oglethorpe was one of the first white men in North America to take a stand on moral grounds against chattel slavery.
Thurmond is the chief executive officer of DeKalb County, Ga., an attorney, and author of several books on historical topics.
