IT Project Management Students Collaborate on the Marshmallow Challenge

School of Computing students in Dr. Scott Spangler's ITEC 3300 project management class on the Macon Campus brainstormed through a leadership challenge gamification activity called the "Marshmallow Challenge.”

The globally renowned leadership and team building activity challenges IT students to solve a puzzle by working together to construct and, as a team, agree upon a solution that creates a platform to hold a marshmallow’s weight on top. The goal is for the structure to be free standing, be higher than other teams‘ buildings, and be focused on the goal. To win, a team must work to solve the problem together in a short timeframe without the instructor’s distractions, such as adding network cables and odd IT systems support objects, leading them away from the goal.

All teams solved the problem before the time ran out. The fun hands-on learning activity challenges students to actively learn to listen emphatically to other’s considerations, agree upon a best solution, and construct the objective together for project success.
