"Tariffs are often used as a political tool to shield certain industries from foreign competition, but they come with potential risks, according to George.
"'Tariffs are typically a political tool to grant favors to specific industries to protect them from imports,' he said. 'There’s a lot of political capital tied up in these decisions, making it difficult to negotiate them away without serious pressure.'"
