MGA Nursing Faculty Leads Knights on Mission to Provide Critical Medical Care in Honduras

Over spring break, MGA's Dr. Lacey Wallace, associate professor of nursing, lead current students Andrea Borrero Cortes and Kenyetta Dubose, alongside a former student and alumna Erica Billingslea, to Honduras to provide critical medical care to the community.

Dr. Wallace ran a medical and dental clinic over four days in a local Honduran church, partnering with a team from United Methodist Volunteers in Mission where she and the MGA nursing students, alongside the UMVIM team saw 900 medical and dental patients. This provided much needed care to an area of Honduras, where medical care is sparse and the closest hospital is over three hours away. The team also participated in providing supplies to local residents, VBS for children and construction.

This is Dr. Wallace's sixth trip to Honduras and fifth year running the clinic. Abner, the young boy pictured below, visited the clinic two years ago at two weeks old with a life threatening illness. The team was able to stabilize him and get him to the nearest hospital, where he received life saving care and emergency surgery. Seeing Abner and his family each year is a highlight of the trip for Knights!
