From June 24-26, Dr. Thomas Matyók, associate professor in the Doctor of Science in Public Safety graduate program, participated in the Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU) International Conference in Vicenza, Italy. This event, focusing on "Policing Approaches to Human Security," gathered experts and practitioners from around the globe to discuss critical issues affecting our societies today.
The conference featured several insightful discussion panels covering a diverse range of topics essential to modern policing and security. Matyók moderated one of the major areas of focus, "Political and Personal Security: The Evolution of Multilateral Strategies in Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings: A Shift in Global Cooperation," where participants shared various strategies and best practices for combating this pervasive issue. They explored innovative approaches to identifying victims, enhancing victim support systems, and strengthening law enforcement's ability to disrupt trafficking networks.
Matyok presented the outcomes of the two-day discussion to the commanding general of the Arma dei Carabinieri, the United States Consular General, Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and representatives from the United States Department of Defense, as well as the City of Vicenza.
The insights and findings from session discussions will be compiled into conference deliverables, which will be presented to both the U.S. Department of State and the United Nations. This is a crucial step in ensuring that the collective knowledge gained during the conference can inform policy-making and enhance global policing strategies.
Overall, the conference was not just an academic exercise but a vital engagement for practitioners committed to enhancing human security through innovative policing approaches.
