Preserving Macon’s History: MGA Professor Helps Catalog Rose Hill Cemetery Burials

Middle Georgia State University’s Liz Riley, associate professor in the School of Business, is helping bring new life to Macon’s past through a detailed effort to catalog every burial in the city’s historic Rose Hill Cemetery.

Working alongside historian Kathleen O’Neal, Riley is transforming thousands of faded, handwritten records into a searchable public database — a task that combines her IT and business expertise with a passion for preserving local history.

In an interview with Georgia CEO, Riley discussed the challenges of decoding old documents, the emotional discoveries made during the project, and how her MGA coursework in data organization and social media connects directly to this community initiative.
