Professor Tina Ashford from the School of Computing delivered the Beyond The Classroom seminar, “Fighting Misinformation: Recognizing Fake News and Escaping Echo Chambers.” on Nov. 5.
Through an engaging blend of media, contemporary examples, and digital literacy tools, Ashford guided attendees in identifying “demons of deception" - misleading images, AI-generated content, and emotionally charged misinformation that spread rapidly across social networks. The presentation examined how algorithmic bias, repetition, and outrage-driven engagement distort perceptions of truth, while offering practical methods for “digital demon hunters” to spot and counter falsehoods.
