Engaging Grant Writing at the Community Level

Students in the Spring 2026 Health Sciences Grant Writing course at Middle Georgia State University recently completed a semester-long project focused on developing grant proposals for local community organizations. Working in teams over six weeks, students applied concepts from the grant writing and proposal development process to create comprehensive proposals aimed at addressing local health disparities.

The student groups partnered with community-based organizations including First Choice Primary Care, United in Pink, and Macon Volunteer Clinic. Each team designed a community health project to support and expand the work of its selected organization, focusing on areas such as healthcare access, youth education and mentorship, senior support services, and assistance for homeless populations.

On April 28, student teams presented their completed grant proposals before judges, faculty, and community representatives. Presentations highlighted each organization’s mission, proposed project goals, implementation strategies, budgets, and sustainability plans, followed by audience Q&A sessions.

Faculty and community partners praised the quality, creativity, and professionalism demonstrated throughout the project, which provided students with valuable hands-on experience in grant writing while exploring solutions to community health needs.
