November 3 | Downtown Macon | 5:30 PM
Dr. Loretta Clayton, Professor of English and Interdisciplinary Studies, is giving a presentation on the topic of “Fashionable Third Places: Fashion, Consumerism, and Social Connection” in downtown Macon as part of the second annual Macon Fashion Week. The talk is free and open to the public and will take place at Andalusia at 497 2nd Street. MGA English alum, Emily Allmond, will introduce Dr. Clayton prior to the presentation.
Produced by Macon Magazine, Macon Fashion Week includes a week of events from workshops and panel discussions to runway shows and designer showcases with a focus on sustainability, creativity, and community. Dr. Clayton’s talk will give an historical overview of the importance of commercial places of fashion as potential “third places,” social places separate from home (the "first place") and the workplace (the "second place”), particularly for women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She will also discuss how fashionable third places have changed over time to consider how we conceive of third places and social connection in the twenty-first century generally, and, specifically, as related to fashion, style, and self-expression.
Seating for the event is limited. To be added to the attendee list, please contact Dr. Clayton directly via email.
