Cross-Department Collaboration Brings Museum Collections to Life

MGA students in the Museum Studies in Practice course recently completed a hands-on audience engagement project in partnership with the Museum of Technology—a collaboration that brought together faculty expertise from both the Department of Information Technology and the Department of History & Political Science.

Under the leadership of Dr. Susan Asbury, assistant professor of history, and Tina Ashford, associate professor of information technology and faculty curator of the Museum of Technology (MoT), students selected artifacts from the MoT collection, conducted independent research, and produced short-form video reels designed to introduce the objects to a contemporary audience.

This interdisciplinary project served two key goals: giving students practical experience with the many ways museums communicate with the public and supporting the Museum of Technology’s expanding social media outreach. Students highlighted a wide range of historic computer and gaming systems, including the Apple II Plus, IBM Model 70, GameCube, and Sega Genesis, as well as classic games such as Gridrunner, Half-Life, Toy Story, and The Legend of Zelda. Their final products included both informational and instructional reels aimed at broad audience engagement.

Keep an eye on the Museum of Technology’s social media channels, where these student-created videos will debut in the coming weeks. For more information or to discuss potential collaborative opportunities, please contact the Museum of Technology at mot@mga.edu.
