Summer weather brings heat waves and Central Georgia has experienced plenty of humidity, sun, and sweat. Student Health Services is reminding you to stay hydrated and practice sun safety during work and play with the following tips:
Your body needs water to function - from your memory to your muscles!
Staying hydrated can help prevent headaches, constipation, and kidney stones while boosting concentration, mood, and energy.
Reach for waterbeforeyou feel thirsty - make a habit of drinking a glass as soon as you wake up to start off strong.
Include foods in your hydration plan - watermelon, cucumbers, apples, and grapes are great snack options.
Dehydration may seem easy to reverse by simply resting and drinking fluids, but it can rapidly progress with severe symptoms.
Complications include dizziness, confusion, seizures, and heat stroke - untreated dehydration can be fatal.
Seeking medical evaluation is important to prevent complications - receiving IV fluids stabilizes electrolyte imbalances when fluids by mouth can't hydrate your body fast enough.
Whenever possible, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours of 10am-4pm or limit exposure by taking frequent breaks in the shade.
Wear sunscreen daily with protective clothing and a hat, ideally with a wide brim - remember to apply sunscreen to ears and neck if wearing a baseball hat.
Protect your eyes with sunglasses.
Remember that anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of skin tone. Self-monitor for skin changes and schedule regular dermatology appointments.
